Guiding Question:
What is an LD?
What are our perceptions of people with LDs?

Read the following definition of a Learning Disability (LD):
“Learning Disabilities” refers to a variety of disorders that affect the acquisition, retention, understanding, organisation or use of verbal and/or non-verbal information.
Understanding Learning Disabilities (LD)
Using the following padlet, brainstorm how an LD might impact a persons life. Post your ideas in red font! (double click on the grey area and type out your thoughts).

Now lets watch the following video. As you watch be sure to note any other observations about the way that a Learning Disability impacts a persons life. After the video, add to the above padlet with additional ideas; be sure to put these ideas in blue font.
Whole Class Discussion:
1. Identify some of the assumptions we made in the first brainstorming session.
2. Why do you think we made these assumptions?
3. Why is it important that we alter our assumptions and perception of LDs?
4. How can we alter our perception?

Two Minute Conversation X2
Think about a time in your life when having an LD (or ADHD) was or could have been an advantage. In pairs you will have 40 seconds to explain this event/moment; your partner will then paraphrase your event in 20 seconds. The second person will then share his/her event/moment for 40 seconds, and the partner will paraphrase this in 20 seconds. When signaled by the teacher, you will find a new partner and you will repeat the process again.

Class Debate
You will be divided into two teams--pro and con. The issue to be debated is "having an learning disability will make an individual more successful in life". Each team will be provided 5 minutes to come up with arguments to support their position. An additional 5 minutes will be provided for each team to anticipate the oppositing teams arguments and prepare rebuttals. Prior to beginning our debate planning we will be identifying the meaning of success as a class (defining our debate terms).
