Understanding Literacy

Guiding Questions:
What is the value of reading and writing in school? In life?
What is involved in reading and writing?
What is reading? What is writing?

Inquiry Activity
For this activity, in pairs, your goal will be twofold:
1. Assess the readings provided and rank them in order of least difficult to most
difficult
2. Determine what characteristics they have that make them different
The chart below will help you organize your observations. Once each pair has completed their investigation, you will share your results with the class
Why Did We Do This Activity?

Defining Literacy & creating a "Theoretical Model"
After discussing your Inquiry results, we will create a class definition of LITERACY. As we consider this concept, we need to remember to connect this concept with all of the other concepts that we have discussed thus far in the course. To achieve this we will be creating a "Theoretical Model" (a visual representation of the connections between all concepts discussed thus far).
Please take a look at some of the theoretical models for various topics below:

Stretching it Out!
A volunteer will lead us in some quick and "much needed" exercises.

Watch the Video Below & Answer the Questions:
1. Do you agree or disagree with the video? Why?
2. Are books the only way to become good readers?
3. If you were to choose a book to read in English what would it be? (create a list of 2-5 books that you would gladly read for English class)

In your journals, respond to the following prompt:
How might your life be different if you were illiterate (unable to read or write)? Be specific in your response.
