Guiding Questions:

What does studying look like?

What do study notes look like and what should be done with them?

What are some study methods? What does it mean to memorize?

Dream Quilt

In a circle, students are asked to reflect on the goals they identified at the beginning of the year. Each student will identify one of the goals they set from themself and explain where he/she is in terms of meeting that goal so far. Each student will then get a square of paper and they must illustrate or write the next step they will take in fulfilling that goal. All the squares will then be "sewn" into a classroom quilt.

Study Note Modelling:

Using class notes from a common course, the teacher will model the creation of a study note. Through think-alouds & pause-&-play techniques, the teacher will assist students in understanding the mental processes involved in studying.

Study Note Modelling Debrief:

Students will be asked to share their observations. The first round of observations must be in the form of questions--students can type these in a shared google doc. The second round of observations will be in the form of "I liked it when...". The third form of observations will be in the form "I didn't like that...". Once these observations are recorded and students have had time to exmaine everyone's contributions, the teacher will open the floor for a discussion about the study note created.

Some Effective Study Methods

Digital Investigation

Your task will be to research and identify two to three different types of study note styles that you feel best fit you as a learner. For each style you are to answer the following:

  • What are the elements of this style?

  • Why would this style be most effective for me?

  • In what ways does it satisfy all the requirements of effective study notes?

  • What might be a disadvantage of this style?

Please remember to record this information in a creative way in your digital portfolio (on the note-taking page). You can create a video, an infographic, a powerpoint, the sky is the limit.

Once you have assessed each study note style, you are expected to "put them in action". You are to spend time throughout the next few weeks using one of the styles in your studying.

You will collect the study notes you create then analyze how effective the process was.

The following must be included in your digital portfolio:

  • at least 1 samples of each style

  • an evaluation of which style was more effective for you and why (this can be in a video, infographic, paragraph, etc)

  • a "committment contract" outlining in which classes you will continue to utlize the study note style, and the indicators that will signal your progress with studying.

PLEASE SEE THE ISU SAMPLE IN THIS WEBSITE TO HELP DIRECT YOUR THINKING!

Assessment Circle

Once again the class will stand in a circle and each person can identify one activity that they liked and one activity that they didn't like and explain why.
