The What and Why of Studying

Guiding Questions:

What is my own history with studying? What, when, how have I studied in the past?

What is studying? What is the process of studying? What are the sub-skill sets for studying?

How is studying connected to learning?

Question Game:

Participants maintain a dialogue of asking questions back and forth for as long as possible, without making any declarative statements. Play begins when the first player asks a question. The second player must respond to the question with another question. Each player must quickly continue the conversation by using only questions. Hesitation and statements are not allowed.

Class Discussion and Brainstorming:

As a class let us determine the following:

1. the process of studying (steps)

2. the various study note types (including advantages and disadvantages)

3. how our process and our study notes fulfill the sub-skills required of studying which we discussed in the powerpoint

3. the barriers to effective studying

Circle Share:

The class will arrange themselves into a circle and each person will identify 1 new thing they learned in the lesson and 1 connection he/she has with the information and his/her past history of studying.

Self and Peer Assessment

Please examine the study notes that you have brought to class. As you examine these notes you are expected to evalute them according to our criteria of effective study notes:

1. Information is condensed (3:1 ratio)

2. Information is in own words

3. No sentences appear

4. visuals are used for memory cuing

5. the notes are organized (logical formatting)

6. Obvious use of diagrams, tables, etc

Once you have evaluated your own notes, please share your notes with a classmate and ask them to provide you with constructive feedback as you sit together and discuss the notes.

Studying is like...

In our community circle, students are asked to create a simile to describe what studying is really like. Once the student as created the simile he/she will explain it to the community.
