Guiding Questions:
What strategies can be used to ensure comprehension during reading?

Investigating Reading Strategies
Using your research skills (and the wonderful features of Google), research at least two different reading strategies. On the board list the strategies that you found and identify how they work, an advantage of the strategy, and a disadvantage of the strategy.

Assessing The Similarities
After you have each identified two learning strategies, we will attempt to identify the similarities amongst all these reading strategies. This will allow us to pin-point the characteristics that make an effective reading strategy.

Reading Strategies

Chart Paper Reading Activity

The teacher has posted three common reading strategies around the room (chart paper). You will each be paired up and assigned a specific reading strategy (chart paper). You are required to review the details of the reading strategy you have been assigned. As a team, you are then to use the reading strategy you have just reviewed and read an article (your teacher will have printed copies for you). Once every team has finished you will then move to the next reading strategy station and, using the same article engage in another reading strategy.

Learn by Teaching
Students will conduct additional research about the reading strategies that they choose to identify in the first "Minds On" activity. Once they have a deep understanding of the components of their chosen strategy they are asked to "teach the class". In their mini-lesson, they must address the what, why, when, where, and how of the strategy. The class will then take the time and practice perfecting the strategies introduced by each student.

Ask a Question, Answer a Question...
Each person will begin with a sheet of paper. On this sheet of paper he/she will write a question about some of the concepts covered throughout the lesson or unit. When instructed by the teacher, each person will then pass their paper to the person on their left. That person will answer the question ask and then create another question. This process will continue until the sheets of paper find their way back to the orginal question creator.
