Gr. 9 Learning Strategies
For this step, create a mind map of your entire course. This will help you to identify major concepts and provide you with the ability to see how concepts within your course are connected.
Guiding Questions
-
How can I be sure to study for all of my exams? How best can I study?
-
What time do I have to study for these exams? What time do I need?
Step 1: Gathering Your Materials
Guiding Questions:
1. Where are your notes? Are they in one centrally located area?
2. What sections of your textbook are pertinent to study? Have these sections been earmarked?
3. Where are your tests and quizzes? Have you made photocopies of these and whited out the answers to redo them all?
4. Have you identified what type of study note you will create? What additional materials and resources will you need to create these notes?
Step 2: Surveying Your Courses

Step 3: Creating an Exam Study Schedule
Your teacher will assist you with creatin an exam study schedule that outlines when to study for what and how long to spend on each subject. To create this schedule, you must rank your subjects in order of easiest to most difficult and then allocate a certain number of hours per subject. A good rule of thumb is the following: every unit will take about 3 hours to review and relearn. Therefore, a minimum of 15 hours must be allocated for a course with 5 units.
We will also be discussing the following:
1. What does studying look like? What does it not look like?
2. What is effective studying? What is ineffective?
3. How can you maximize your mental energy during studying?
Step 4: Creating Study Notes
Once you have created your study schedule, you will begin creating study notes. Please feel free to look back at our Studying unit for some assistance with these notes.
