1. What were your goals?
2. Which goals do you feel you met? Which goals do you feel you
didn't meet?

Imagine If...
As a class we will examine a typical day in your life. We will breakdown that day into 6 segments and each person will come to the board to identify all the activities that happen during your assigned segment. Once we have broken down a typical day, we will watch the following video clip:
Now we will Imagine If you were illiterate. You will return to the board and identify all the activities that you might have difficulty doing if you were illiterate. Once everyone has completed assessing their segment of the day, we will discuss the following questions as a class:
1. What is illiteracy?
2. What does it mean to be illiterate?
3. Do you know anyone who is illiterate? If so, how does it impact their life?
4. How does illiteracy impact life (beyond the inability to read and write)?
Setting the Groundwork

As a class we will brainstorm our understanding of reading and writing. On the board you will see two web maps: What is reading? and What is writing? Using a white board marker brainstorm as many things as you can think about to define and understand reading and writing. Once everyone has had a chance to contribute to the web maps, we will discuss your responses.
What is Reading?
As a class we will read through the above article and engage in a few important activities that will help us understand what reading really is.

Strategy #1--RAP

Examine the RAP reading strategy.
-
Identify how it fulfills the various "effective reading methods" outlined in the powerpoint (above).
-
What might be the drawbacks of this strategy?
-
Design a template that might help a reader utilize this strategy more effectively.

Why might this strategy be effective for reading?
-
How is it similar and different from RAP?
-
Design a "page" template that would assist a read be guided through this particular strategy
Strategy #3

What is the strategy called?
How can the strategy be used?
How does the strategy fit the "effective reading methods" we have already discussed?
What might a simple template for this strategy be?

It is now time to practice each of the above reading strategies!
What is Writing?
As a class (using the venn diagram below) we will identify the similarities and differences between the different types of writing that we engage in on a daily basis.

How can we be more effective writers?
Each student will be given a whiteboard marker. You are to come up to the board and outline how you approach a writing piece at school. What are the stages that you engage in inorder to write something you feel will be well recieved by your teacher?
Once everyone has had a chance to outline their individual process we will examine the commonalities amongst our own processes.
Why Bother?
Examine the infographics below:

1. Explain the importance of each stage of the writing process.
2. Which stage of the writing process students (in general) spend the most time on? Why?
3. Which stage of the writing process do students (in general) spend the least time on? Why?
4. For each stage of the writing process identify the % of time you should spend in that stage (divide up 100%)
Strategies for each stage of the writing process
For each of the following stages we will brainstorm as a class different methods that will help us to create our writing pieces. Feel free to use google search engine to help you identify as many ways we can brainstorm, outline, draft, revise, edit, and publish.
