GLS1O: Grade 9 Learning Strategies

ISP: Design Thinking Action Plan—“How Might I…”

(Self-Directed Inquiry Project)—20%

Task:

For this project, you are required to use the Design Thinking Process to create an Action Plan for the year and then execute this Action Plan. You will be brainstorming and then choosing an area of weakness that you experience as a learner (ex. studying, note-taking, memorizing, reading, homework completion, seeking assistance, etc). Then you will design methods for combating this area of need. You will then implement this plan, reflect on the implementations, revise the plan, and implement again (iterative cycles). By the end of the year the aim is to have a system in place to combat the area of need that you identified.

Process:

  • Understand the Design Thinking Model (See Design Thinking Lab Below)

  • Engage in the stages of Design Thinking with regards to yourself as a learner (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, & Reflect)

  • Work with your peers to refine your first iteration of your plan

  • Create a final polished copy of the Design Thinking Plan

  • Implement the plan

  • Create a reflection about the implementation and dialogue with your peers

  • Recreate the Design Thinking Plan (independently and in dialogue with your peers)

  • Create a final polished copy of the Design Thinking Plan

  • Implement the plan

  • Create a reflection about the implementation and dialogue with your peers

  • Continue Process…

Product:

At the end of the year (April), you will gather all the iterations of your plan and create a presentation which will 1) describe your cycles through the Design Thinking Process, 2) Explain what you have achieved through this process, 3) Identify and discuss the challenges and problems you experienced with this process, 4) discuss your next steps with this Design Thinking Process. You can choose to create this presentation on any medium (ex. Prezi, PowerPoint, video, Bristol board, etc……)
