Career Fair Research Projects (15%)

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to use the following skills: collaboration, planning, researching, oral presentations, cooperation, and conflict resolution.

Task:

Students will be asked to work in partners (or in groups of three). In these groups they will be assigned a career path (ex. Medical Sciences). Together the group will determine what skills and courses are necessary for the field under study.  Each person will then choose a profession within this field to research. The group is required to create a career presentation. Your focus will be to inform and interest your audience (fellow peers) in a potential career path specific to a certain field of study.

Process:

  • Choose a field of study (see the list below)

  • Research this field of study to determine the skills needed to be successful and courses required in high school to enter a university program in this field of study

  • Gather with your group mates (the people who are also researching that field of study) and discuss skills and course requirements. From this discussion you will have a “snapshot” of the pathway through the field of study you have chosen.

  • You will then select a specific career within the field of study you have chosen.

  • Once you have selected this career, you are expected to research and find the following information: additional schooling or certification (extra-curricular activities) required, average yearly salary, explanation of what interests you about this profession, explanation of why you would excel at this career, a day in the life of this career.

The following are the different fields of study that you can choose from:

Product:

You will be required to present your information in a “Career Fair Booth”. The following are some of the ways that you can create your “Career Fair Booth” display: digital infographic, slideshow, Bristol board, Thinglink, Website, etc. During the “Career Day” we will be creating a classroom gallery so that guests will be able to walk through and view all the “Career Fair Booths”. The teacher will then ask you to present your “Career Booth”.
