Gr. 9 Learning Strategies

Guiding Questions
-
What is studying? Why does it follow note-taking? What is the process of studying and its composite skills?
-
What is my own history with studying? What, when, how have I studied?
-
What should study notes look like? What should be done with study notes?
-
What does it mean to memorize? What process is most effective when asked to memorize?
Study Process Inquiry
In pairs, you will think back to a time when you studied effectively. Discuss with your partner the following:
a. the elements that made it effective studying
b. the actions/behaviours you engaged in
c. the process you used
When both partners have had a chance to discuss their history of studying, collaboratively outline a "study system/process". Please be ready to share with the class.

Examining ASPIRE
Each student will be assigned a portion of the ASPIRE study system. On the infographic below there are three words that identify the actions/
behaviours required during each phase of the system your job is to identify and describe how these actions/behaviours fit into the study system as a whole. Please be prepared to discuss with the class.

Understanding Study Notes
Around the room you will see different study note styles. As you travel from station to station, identify and record answers for the following:
1. What are the disadvantages of this study note style?
2. What are the advantages of this study note style?
3. What subjects would this work best for? Why?
4. Have you used this before? Is so, how did it go? If not, why not?
Once everyone has had a chance to vist all the stations, we will discuss these different study note styles as a class.

Inquiry Research Activity
You are required to research either a study note style and a test taking strategy. Be prepared to present your chosen study note style and test taking strategy to the class (in this presentation identify the 5W&H).

Understanding Memorization--Class Discussion
1. What is memorization?
2. When is memorization important?
3. What is the goal of memorizaiton?
4. What are some interesting memorization techniques?
In groups you will choose one memorization technique and two subjects (ex. geography and science) and use the memorization technique to create two study aids for a future test (or past test). You will share these aids with the class.

Practicing Study Note Creation
We will be taking the next few classes to work on study notes for our other subjects. You will be required to use one or two of the study note styles that we have already discussed in class. You will be assessed on your progress and products so please ask for as much feedback as possible.
